Tukur Mamu, an alleged terrorist negotiator, has been denied bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja, News About Nigeria has learnt.

Mamu was arrested in September 2022 by Egyptian security officials at the Cairo International Airport on suspicion of terrorism financing, and was later arrested by Nigeria’s Department of State Services upon deportation.

He is facing a 10-count charge of terrorism financing and other charges. Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed Mamu’s bail application, stating that he did not provide sufficient evidence to persuade the court to grant him bail.

The judge also held that Mamu had not rebutted the prosecution’s claim that he was likely to commit further offenses. Furthermore, Mamu claimed that the DSS custody could not address his health issues, but the judge ruled that the court must consider other factors before making a decision.

The judge said that if the custodian was unable to provide medical care, but could ensure that the defendant had access to suitable medical care, the court would not grant bail.

The court also noted that the evidence showed that it was only after Mamu refused DSS medical services that he was taken to the Arewa Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Jabi.

The court ruled that, in exercising his discretion on a bail application on charges punishable by imprisonment exceeding three years, the court’s discretion to grant bail would not be exercised in favor of the defendant if any of the conditions in Section 162 of the ACJA 2015 were established.

Therefore, the judge rejected Mamu’s application and struck it out.
