The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has criticized an attack on the headquarters of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) by Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel.
News About Nigeria reports that the incident, which took place on Thursday in Lagos, reportedly left several people injured and caused damage to the company’s facilities and equipment.
The attack is as a result of IKEDC’s decision to disconnect electricity at the Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja due to unpaid bills.
In response, air force personnel stormed the electricity company’s premises, leading to chaos.
Adelabu expressed deep concern over the attack, stressing that there are proper channels for addressing disputes rather than resorting to force.
He pointed out that the power sector is vital to the nation’s economy and any disruption affects millions of Nigerians who rely on stable electricity for homes, businesses, hospitals, and schools.
He warned that such actions could slow efforts to improve power supply across the country.
He urged all parties involved to remain calm and use peaceful and legal means to resolve conflicts.
He also reminded the public that damaging public infrastructure only worsens existing challenges rather than solving them.
The incident occurred just as IKEDC announced that it had reached an agreement with the air force regarding the N4 billion debt that led to the power disconnection.
Meanwhile, Adelabu called on the military to act with professionalism and avoid actions that could endanger civilians or public utilities.
He also commended IKEDC staff for their patience during the attack and reassured them that the government remains committed to ensuring stability in the power sector.
Adelabu encouraged all stakeholders to work together to improve electricity services instead of engaging in disputes that could disrupt progress.
