A staff member of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency and others have been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nasarawa state for allegedly diverting palliatives intended for the state’s most vulnerable citizens.

In a statement seen by News About Nigeria on Tuesday, secret police spokesperson Peter Afunaya revealed that investigations were carried out in response to accusations of palliative diversion from various state administrations, leading to the capture of the thieves.

“Consequently, the Service undertook investigations in that regard and has recovered some of the items as well as apprehended the suspects. Among those suspects are officials of Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA) and their accomplices in the markets, notably Modern Market Lafia, where the items were being resold,” he said.

According to the DSS spokesman, the suspects have been given over for the necessary disciplinary actions.

He urged members of the public who may have knowledge of the diversion of palliatives to contact the appropriate security services so that appropriate action could be taken.

In an effort to mitigate the effects of the elimination of fuel subsidies, President Bola Tinubu provided state governors with palliative monies and supplies.

The immediate withdrawal of the fuel subsidy was announced by President Tinubu upon taking office as the nation’s president. Fuel prices at the pump have increased due to the decision from roughly N189 per litre to over N600 at this time.

However, many Nigerians have persisted in expressing concerns about the impact of the FG’s palliative measures, with many voicing worry about the diversion of palliatives that have been designated for the underprivileged.
