Igbo Jah: Enugu Residents Protest Killing Of Musician By Police

Protests have erupted across Enugu State following the alleged murder of local musician Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah, by a police inspector.

News About Nigeria reported that the inspector has been taken into custody and the police have launched a thorough investigation, confirmed police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe.

Reports indicate the protests have escalated, with hundreds of residents gathering near the anti-cult headquarters, attempting to set the facility ablaze.

Police officers at the scene prevented the attempted arson, but protesters have blocked several roads in the capital, including Onu Asata, where they are burning tires and chanting.

In response, police have deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Command, State Headquarters, Enugu, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said the musician was reportedly leaving the squad’s headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet-to-be ascertained, a police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim.

According to the statement, the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah has mourned the death of the singer, describing the incident as unfortunate in a statement on Saturday.

According to the governor, Igbo Jah’s death is a huge loss for Ndigbo in general and Ndi Enugu in particular.

Mbah also disclosed that a thorough investigation has been ordered into the incident to ensure that he gets justice.

The statement reads, “The unfortunate death of popular Ogene musician, Igbo Jah

“I received with a deep sense of grief the untimely death of Okezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah, under a very sad circumstance. It is a huge loss for us as Ndigbo in general and Ndi Enugu in particular.
