Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has charged leaders to focus more on food security.
News About Nigeria reports that Obasanjo spoke in Sokoto at the formal unveiling of 136 housing units.
The formal unveiling of the 136 housing units was purchased at the cost of N1.820 billion by the Sokoto state government for allocation to low-income earners and other citizens in the state on an owner-occupier basis to address the growing need for shelter in the state.
The former president is on a 2-day working visit to Sokoto State to unveil projects at the invitation of Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
He said food security—‘stomach infrastructure’—was at the top, while personal and health security took the lesser rankings.
Obasanjo also acknowledged the giant strides being made by Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, whom he described as a leader working and running a good race.
In the areas of transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing projects, Obasanjo described him as a committed leader whose resilience and performance were likened to those of a stallion horse.
“Your strong, energetic, and resilient qualities in leadership have made you get it all within the space of your one year.”
“Putting all these in place will surely brighten your chances of seeking a second-term mandate without stress,” he said.
The former president applauded Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar for their spirited contributions to the development of the state as good political mentors.
“I will say Wamakko remains a good mentor who has gotten a good mentee in the person of the governor,” he said.
Earlier, Governor Aliyu Sokoto said the idea of coming up with numerous housing projects was in tune with his campaign promises to deliver human-oriented projects that would prove the welfare and standards of the people in the state.
Gov. Aliyu, however, explained that the state government had committed enormous resources to building and completing many other similar projects across the state, including road construction, empowerment items, water, and agricultural inputs for farmers, as well as equipping hospitals.
“We are determined to continue developing the state for proper repositioning and providing state-of-the-art adjourning facilities at all sites, including Islamiyya schools, markets, and playgrounds, among others,” he mentioned while appreciating the former President for honouring the state invitation to be part of history.
