Nationwide Strike: NLC Shutdown Secretariat, Offices In Lagos

Members of the Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have shutdown the Lagos State Secretariat and other offices in the state in compliance with the nationwide strike action, News About Nigeria reports. 

The strike which began on Monday, according to the Congress, is to facilitate the implementation of the minimum wage demanded from the federal government.

Members of the Congress, on Monday, while implementing the strike, shut the gate of the State Secretariat at Alausa, Ikeja, cordoning off the entire premises from workers gaining access.

According to reports, the workers gathered as early as 7.30 am on Monday and locked the access gates into the Secretariat, thereby, preventing vehicular movement into the premises.

They were supervised by armed security personnel of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command, to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order or possible hijack by miscreants.

The premises shut comprises of governor’s office, his deputy, the state House of Assembly, Ministries, Departments, some Agencies, banks, among other businesses.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Lagos, was also shutdown and staff chased out of the Agidingbi, Ikeja, office.

In another update, hundreds of passengers have been left stranded at Murtala Muhammed Airport.

It was gathered that the aviation unions locked the gates leading to the airport building, leaving passengers outside, although flights are ongoing at the international terminal of the airport.

The Secretary General of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) stated that GAT and MMA2, which are the domestic terminals of airports in Lagos, are under lock and key based on the directive of the NLC and TUC.

Aviation workers have called a strike in the domestic terminals.
