Former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Professor Joe Irukwu, has passed away at the age of 89, News About Nigeria reports.

The sad news was announced in a statement by Prince Harrison Eze Okorie, the President General of Amaokwe Item Welfare Union.

The statement expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their esteemed patron, describing him as a great father, grandfather, son, and brother.

Prof. Irukwu, also known as Chief Joseph Ogbonnaya Irukwu, held the distinguished titles of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

The Amaokwe Item Welfare Union, on behalf of the entire Amaba Ukwu kindred and the immediate family, conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

They urged the community of Amaokwe to join them in mourning the departure of this remarkable individual, while also offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.

The Union recognized the significant impact Prof. Irukwu had on their community and emphasized the need to support and uplift his family during this difficult time.

Prof. Irukwu’s contributions spanned several fields, as he excelled as a lawyer, lecturer, author, and insurance expert.

He played a pivotal role as the founding managing director of the Nigerian Reinsurance Corporation, a position from which he steered the organization toward success.

Later, he established the African Development Insurance Company, which was subsequently acquired by Diamond Bank, showcasing his entrepreneurial acumen.

His educational achievements were equally noteworthy. In 1962, Prof. Irukwu earned a degree in Law and Insurance from a prestigious British university, further solidifying his expertise in these domains.

His commitment to knowledge and professionalism served as an inspiration to many, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields he ventured into.
