National Grid Collapses For The Eighth Time This Year

Nigeria has once again experienced a national blackout following a collapse of the national grid on Monday, October 14, 2024.

The failure reportedly occurred shortly before 7:00 p.m., with various electricity distribution companies confirming disruptions in their regions.

News About Nigeria understands that this incident marks the eighth grid collapse this year, with the most recent occurring in July.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) informed customers that the power interruption was due to a “general system collapse” at 6:48 p.m., affecting service across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.

“All our interface TCN stations are out of supply,” the EEDC stated, adding that they are awaiting further updates from the National Control Centre in Osogbo.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the EEDC said.

Similarly, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) notified its customers, citing a system failure affecting its coverage areas and assuring that efforts are underway to restore power as soon as the grid is stable.

The company said, “Dear Valued Customer, Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding.”

Kano Distribution Company echoed the notification, with Corporate Communications Head Sani Bala Sani attributing their power shortage to a “system disturbance” at 6:48 p.m. and encouraging customers to guard against vandalism of power infrastructure during the outage.
