#October1 Protest: 'Release Detained Activists' - Amnesty International To Kano Police

Human rights group, Amnesty International, on Tuesday called for the immediate release of five detained activists.

News About Nigeria reports that the activists were on Monday summoned by the Kano State Police Command for questioning but the police refused to allow them to return home and also confiscated their phones.

The detained activists are Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Amina Bello, Sani NaRogo, Comrade Anas and Comrade Abdullahi.

The activists, who are of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), are said to be at the forefront of the October 1st protest which is a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protest against hunger and hardship.

Reacting to the detention of the five activists, Amnesty International in a series of tweets on its official X handle questioned the reason for their detention.

The Human Rights group also stated that their arrest and detention show that the Nigerian government is intolerant of dissenting views.

“The Nigerian authorities must allow everyone in the country to freely exercise their human rights as guaranteed by Nigeria’s constitution and international human rights obligations. The authorities must guarantee their safety and allow them access to lawyers and family.”

Meanwhile, despite their detention, many Nigerians, especially youths across the various parts of the Federation, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest against the rising cost of living in Nigeria under the President Tinubu-led administration.

According to the protesters, President Tinubu inflicted unprecedented hardship on millions of Nigerians and “pushed many into poverty and hardship through his anti-people and harsh economic decisions.”
