The Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IE) has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for customers classified under Band A.
Effective May 6, 2024, customers in this category will now pay N206.80/kWh, down from the previous rate of N225/kWh, as stated in a circular issued by the company’s management.
The circular assured customers under Band A of a guaranteed electricity supply ranging from 20 to 24 hours daily.
However, the tariff for customers in other categories, including Bands B, C, D, and E, will remain unchanged, as per the announcement.
“Dear esteemed customers, please be informed of the downward tariff review of our Band A feeders from N225/kwh to N206.80/kwh effective 6th May 2024 with guaranteed availability of 20–24 hours of supply daily. The tariff for Bands B, C, D, and E remains unchanged,” the statement read.
This decision comes amid recent adjustments in electricity tariffs, particularly for customers classified under Band A.
On April 3, News About Nigeria reported that the Federal Government had approved a hike in electricity tariffs for customers falling within this category.
The announcement was made during a press briefing in Abuja by Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Oseni disclosed that customers in Band A, who were supposed to receive 20 hours of electricity daily, would now pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, up from the previous N66.
He further stated that these customers constitute 15 percent of the country’s 12 million electricity consumers.
Additionally, some customers in Band A were slated for a downgrade to Band B due to the failure of electricity distribution companies to meet the required hours of supply.
The decision sparked widespread criticism from consumers, civil society, and politicians.
