Measles Outbreak: Adamawa Govt Shuts Down Schools

The Adamawa State government has announced its decision to close down both public and private schools in the state following the outbreak of measles.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Aisha Umar, in Yola, the Adamawa state capital on Monday.

The closure, according to the statement, is to mitigate the spread of the disease and to also enable the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) to vaccinate the vulnerable age group.

The ministry further revealed that schools in the state will be reopened next week Monday, May 13, 2024.

The statement partly reads, “In view of the above, all public and private schools are hereby directed to close down schools accordingly, please.”

News About Nigeria reports that the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami, revealed on Friday that about 42 children have been confirmed dead following the measle outbreak in the state.

According to the Commissioner, the death toll was recorded in vaccine non-compliant communities of the state.

Tangwami further listed the highest hit areas to include; Mubi North LGA with 23 people while 19 people died of the disease in Gombi LGA of the State.

He, however, assured the general public that the government is working tirelessly to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Commissioner further revealed that vaccines have been released to the areas and proper monitoring would be done to ensure that all the children in the areas are vaccinated.

“Measles vaccines have been released to those areas, and our field teams are containing the situation.”
