Former Presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri has cautioned Nigerian politicians against making careless utterances that might undermine Nigeria and ECOWAS policies on the ongoing effort to return Niger to democratic rule.

Issuing this warning in a tweet on Friday, Mr. Omokri suggested that public comments may undermine Nigeria’s foreign policy.

“Nigerian leaders from the ruling party and opposition parties ought to be careful about their public utterances on Nigeria and ECOWAS’s policies on Niger. Some public comments may be seen as undermining Nigeria’s foreign policy and giving aid and comfort to the putschists. If we have divergent opinions on what Nigeria ought to do, the patriotic thing would be to privately pass it on to the current government through back channels,” a tweet by Omokri read.

“If we have disputes about the conduct and result of Nigeria’s last election, it does not mean that we are ourselves an undemocratic country. Democracy is not only when your candidate wins. Moreover, the case is in court. That is democracy in action,” he added.

The former presidential spokesperson further explained that Nigeria must have a united front domestically if the country wanted its foreign policy, especially in a potential conflict zone, to carry weight.

News About Nigeria reports that his comment comes as President Bola Tinubu led ECOWAS on Thursday, ordered standby troops to Niger. The development comes against many calls against the use of force to restore the country to democratic rule.

However prominent Nigerians including Shehu Sani and Femi Fani-Kayode have differently faulted the resolution of ECOWAS after its meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
