The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, has revealed why it increased its tuition fees, News About Nigeria reports.

Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola made the revelation in a meeting on Friday.

Ogunsola said the school fees remained unchanged for over twenty years.

But, due to the negative effects of the fuel subsidy removal, the price managing education materials have soared.

Previously, undergraduate students were paying N19,000, but the management has now set new fees based on the specific courses.

Students pursuing medicine will now have to pay N190,250, while those enrolled in courses with laboratory and studio requirements are expected to pay N140,250.

For programmes that do not involve labs or studios, the fees are fixed at N100,750.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) UNILAG branch released a statement on July 20, 2023, detailing the outcomes of a meeting with the top management staff, including the VC Prof. Ogunsola.

During this meeting, the VC informed the representatives of the three non-academic staff unions about the planned fee increase for undergraduate students at UNILAG.

According to the statement, students without lab and studio use will have to pay N100,750, those with lab use will be charged N140,250, and students in the College of Medicine would need to pay N190,250.

During the meeting, a representative from SSANU, Rasaki Yusuf, requested a rebate for staff members who have children attending the university.

However, the VC explained that the new fees were set nationally and could not be modified for specific student categories.

As a consolation, Ogunsola suggested that staff members could pay the fees in installments, but they must settle the payment one month before the final exams.

Apart from the fee increase, other topics were discussed during the meeting, including hostel accommodations for staff wards.
