The confiscation of more than 100 million pounds ($129 million) connected to Nigerian politician and former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, is currently up for decision by a UK court, News About Nigeria reports.
Ibori, who led Delta State as governor from 1999 to 2007, received a 13-year prison term after being found guilty of fraud and money laundering in 2013.
He was released from prison in 2016 and came back to Nigeria in 2017. According to a recent report from Reuters, British authorities have asked a judge to seize $101.5 million that can be linked to Ibori.
According to information obtained, Southwark Crown Court Judge David Tomlinson has reached factual conclusions on the cash.
On Thursday, July 20, a hearing was held to talk about how the confiscation amount should be determined.
Ibori should have to forfeit 101.5 million pounds in all, according to lead prosecutor Jonathan Kinnear, and if he doesn’t pay up, he should receive a sentence of five to ten years in prison.
More than ten years of legal disputes about the attempt to seize the funds will come to an end once the matter is decided.
Ibori, who missed the court on Thursday, texted the news agency that he intends to challenge the confiscation order.
