The House of Representatives has turned down a proposal to suspend the hike in petrol prices.

News About Nigeria recalls that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Tuesday said petrol will no longer sell for 537 naira per litre.

The new price is 617 naira per litre.

During his inauguration ceremony, President Tinubu announced that the fuel subsidy will be removed.

The removal of fuel subsidy sparked outrage amongst Nigerians and different groups including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

Spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Lawmaker for Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo State, Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga advised that the recent hikes in premium motor spirit popular known as petrol should be, suspended, investigated and amended.

However, the House voted against the amendment

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu questioned the appropriateness of the House intervening in a matter when the NNPC MD, Mele Kyari already said the prices are controlled by market forces.

Instead, they decided to conduct an investigation to verify the reasons behind these increases.

Since the fuel subsidy removal, the federal government has been able to save a whopping N400bn. To cushion the effect of the subsidy removal, the Federal Government rolled out palliatives.

Tinubu promised 12m Nigerian households N8000 monthly. However, Nigerians attacked the president for planning to disburse such an amount.

Following public outrage and outcry, Tinubu on Tuesday night ordered a review of the N8000 cash transfer.

Special Adviser to the president on special duties, communications, and strategy, Dele Alake said Tinubu has instructed the disclosure of the complete range of government’s relief measures to Nigerians.
