The faction of the Labour Party led by Lamidi Apapa has asserted that the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Julius Abure, is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges of forgery, impersonation, and other allegations, News About Nigeria reports.
This information was disclosed by Abayomi Arabambi, the suspended national publicity secretary of the Labour Party.
According to Arabambi, the Police have insisted on Abure’s appearance due to his failure to respond to previous invitations, which ultimately led to his arrest on Friday and subsequent detention at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).
Arabambi revealed that it took a whole day after his arrest before Julius Abure was granted bail.
He further added that the Labour Party Chairman attempted but failed to find individuals who would meet the bail conditions, which required the submission of their international passports and posed the risk of arrest if Abure were to abscond.
Regarding the potential outcome of the case, Arabambi stated that while Abure might be cleared of the main charges, he and his associates would be ineligible for any future elective positions within the party.
Arabambi emphasized that this situation demonstrates the party’s commitment to fairness and justice, as well as its zero tolerance for criminal activities.
In addition to Abure and the former National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Oluchi Opara, and Clement Ojukwu have also been implicated in the allegations, as noted by Arabambi.
The suspended publicity secretary explained that the former officers were investigated and invited to provide explanations regarding fraudulent acts.
He further claimed that Abure, specifically, attempted to evade arrest by the Police on Friday.
When approached for a response to these issues, the National Publicity Secretary (NPS) of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, dismissed them as propaganda from Arabambi.
Ifoh firmly stated that Abure had not received any invitation from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and therefore did not need to appear in court.
According to Ifoh, the matter is being handled by lawyers on Abure’s behalf.
