The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, into custody, following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, News About Nigeria reports.
Emefiele had been directed to hand over his duties to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) while an investigation and necessary reforms were carried out.
However, the arrest by the DSS has further complicated the situation.
It is important to note that the DSS had previously filed a case against Emefiele, requesting permission to arrest, investigate, and detain him.
However, the application was denied by a federal high court in Abuja. Despite this, the DSS has moved forward with the arrest.
The allegations against Emefiele by the DSS are as follows:
Emefiele is accused of using funds raised for his unsuccessful presidential campaign and money diverted from government funds to support unknown gunmen, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The mismanagement of Nigeria’s social investment programs, specifically the National Social Investment and Rehabilitation Scheme (NISRAL) and the Anchor Borrowers Scheme, is another accusation.
The DSS has labeled Emefiele’s actions as illegal economic crimes with national security implications.
Money laundering is one of the charges brought against Emefiele.
The DSS claims that Emefiele engaged in unscrupulous activities through intermediaries.
Round tripping, a fraudulent practice of buying and selling currency to create artificial profits, is also part of the allegations.
Emefiele is accused of conferring financial benefits upon himself and others unlawfully.
The DSS views Emefiele’s actions as a threat to national security.
There are allegations of a criminal conspiracy to divert government resources.
Emefiele is also accused of involvement in financing terrorism.
The arrest of the CBN Governor by the DSS marks a significant development in this ongoing saga.
It highlights the seriousness of the allegations leveled against Emefiele and emphasizes the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring national security.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how these accusations will be addressed and whether there will be further implications for Nigeria’s financial and economic landscape.
