Seun Kuti, a popular Afrobeat artist, has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos, News About Nigeria reports.
The court’s decision not only includes bail for Kuti but also orders the Nigerian police to complete their investigation into an alleged assault on a policeman within 48 hours.
This allows Kuti to return home while the investigation continues.
According to a witness, the court has given the police a 48-hour window to finalize their investigations before Kuti can be released on bail.
Two individuals with landed property in Lagos are required to act as sureties for his bail.
In a surprising twist, the Chief Magistrate has instructed the police to step back from prosecuting Kuti.
Instead, she has directed that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions for further legal proceedings.
On Monday night, it was reported that the police at the Panti facility, specifically the Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, declined to release Seun Kuti on bail.
They made a failed attempt to trick him into making a statement that could implicate him in the alleged assault on a police officer.
The police claimed that they had not yet concluded their investigation, rejecting the lawyer’s request for bail.
The situation took a turn for the worse when Mr. Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and one of Kuti’s defense lawyers, called the police commissioner to complain about the officers’ unruly behavior, mistreatment of his client, and their preventing Olumide-Fusika from being present during Kuti’s interrogation.
It has also come to light that the police officers at the facility continued to show hostility towards Seun Kuti, his legal team, and his family members.
