The recent incident involving Seun Kuti, the popular Afrobeat singer, and a police officer has prompted the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR, to take swift action, News About Nigeria reports.
In a viral video, Kuti was seen assaulting the uniformed officer, leading to the IGP’s immediate directive to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, to arrest the singer.
Additionally, the IGP has emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the root cause of the assault.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed the IGP’s stance in a statement, assuring the public that the matter would be diligently investigated, and appropriate legal action would be taken based on the findings.
The IGP strongly condemns any act of disrespect or disregard towards authority figures and emphasizes that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated.
Seun Kuti responded to the incident by addressing it on his Instastory.
He clarified that the altercation arose from the officer allegedly posing a threat to him and his family.
However, Kuti revealed that the policeman had since apologized, and he had decided not to pursue charges against him.
He urged those who accused him of seeking attention to desist from doing so and to consider the consequences that the police officer might face, such as losing his job.
The IGP’s prompt response to the incident highlights the significance of maintaining respect for law enforcement officials and upholding the symbols of authority.
The directive to arrest Seun Kuti demonstrates the commitment of the police force to ensuring that individuals who engage in acts of violence against officers are held accountable.
