President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State for a series of project inaugurations in the oil-rich region, News About Nigeria has learnt.
Governor Nyesom Wike extended an invitation to Tinubu and received him and his entourage at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday morning.
Tinubu’s plane touched down at 10:03 am, and he was welcomed by Wike’s entourage, which included members of the National and State Assembly, local government chairmen, and government officials.
Supporters of the governor were also present at the airport and were granted access to the tarmac area under tight security control.
Later in the day, a state banquet will be held in honor of the President-Elect.
In a state broadcast on Tuesday, Governor Wike announced that Wednesday would be a holiday and urged residents of Rivers State to come out in large numbers to welcome Tinubu.
The Governor’s invitation to Tinubu and the grand reception are indicative of the importance of the oil-rich region to the Nigerian government and its plans for development.
The inauguration of several projects in the region is a significant development that will benefit both the people of Rivers State and the entire country.
It demonstrates the government’s commitment to developing the region and addressing some of the challenges facing its people, such as unemployment and underdevelopment.
Meanwhile, Wike has come under heavy criticism over Tinubu’s visit to the state.
Senator Shehu Sani had slammed Wike for declaring a public holiday because of Tinubu.
In a post on his Twitter handle, Sani applauded the commissioning of projects but criticized the halt of economic, social, and educational activities in the state, calling it a sign of desperation for favors and accommodation by a lickspittle.
