President Muhammadu Buhari is set to attend the coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as King and Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, News About Nigeria reports.
Buhari will join other world leaders at the ceremony which will take place on May 6, 2023.
Ahead of the coronation, there will be a Commonwealth Summit for Presidents and Heads of Government of Commonwealth countries, which Buhari is scheduled to attend.
The summit will focus on the Future of the Commonwealth and the Role of the Youth.
Buhari’s visit to the UK is aimed at strengthening bilateral relationships between the two countries, which were once colonized by Britain.
The President’s delegation includes the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed; the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen Babagana Monguno (Rtd); the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Abubakar; and the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, among other senior government officials.
In November, Buhari met with King Charles III in Buckingham Palace to strengthen Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom.
During the meeting, Buhari noted that the King “speaks very well of Nigeria and wants the relationship to continue and if possible improve”.
Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, has maintained a strong relationship with the UK.
The coronation of King Charles III and his wife is an opportunity for Nigeria to further strengthen its relationship with the UK.
Buhari’s participation in the Commonwealth Summit is particularly significant as it provides an avenue for him to deliberate on the future of the Commonwealth and the role of youth in shaping its future.
As a member of the Commonwealth, Nigeria has played an active role in the organization, which is focused on promoting democracy, human rights, and economic development among member countries.
Buhari’s visit to the UK is expected to yield positive outcomes for Nigeria, particularly in the areas of trade and investment.
The UK is one of Nigeria’s major trading partners, and there are opportunities for both countries to strengthen their economic ties.
Additionally, Buhari’s participation in the Commonwealth Summit will provide a platform for Nigeria to engage with other member countries and explore opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.
