Femi Fani-Kayode, the director of New Media in the defunct All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, has blasted Cardinal John Onaiyekan for his remarks regarding the swearing-in of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Nigeria’s president, News About Nigeria reports.
The Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Abuja stated that it does not make sense to swear-in individuals who are still being challenged in court.
Onaiyekan who was a guest on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily argued that there are ongoing court cases that need to be settled before the swearing-in ceremony.
The cleric added that Nigeria’s election system needs to be properly reviewed so that a winner can be determined according to the people’s wishes.
Fani-Kayode responded to Onaiyekan’s remarks, stating that the Nigerian people have spoken and that any attempt to stop Tinubu‘s presidency has already failed.
The APC chieftain claimed that those who refused to accept Tinubu’s victory will perish like Pharaoh.
He added that those who wish Tinubu ill will see the grave before he does.
He further stated that Tinubu will be sworn in on May 29th, regardless of what others may want.
Meanwhile, on May 8, the presidential election petition court will begin hearing cases related to Bola Tinubu’s victory as the president-elect.
Tinubu won the February 25 presidential election with 8,794,726 votes, while Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, received 6,984,520 votes and Peter Obi of the Labour Party got 6,101,533 votes.
Both Atiku and Obi have filed separate petitions against the election result.
They are challenging Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the election and also claiming that he did not get the majority of the lawful votes cast.
They also contend that the vice president-elect, Kashim Shettima, had a double nomination that contravened the electoral act.
The hearing on May 8 is expected to settle pending applications before setting a timetable for the hearing of substantive matters.
This pre-hearing session will be important in determining the timeline for the court proceedings, and the election tribunal has stopped receiving replies from petitioners since April 23.
In addition to the petitions filed by Atiku and Obi, some other political parties have also challenged the presidential election result, and all parties have exchanged processes and replies.
