President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he has no plans to remain in Abuja after handing over on May 29.
Buhari said he is already getting set to retire to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State once his presidential term ends.
He made this known in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, at the State House in Abuja yesterday while receiving the outgoing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Wendy Laing.
Buhari said that he intends to be “as far away from Abuja as possible” when he retires.
Buhari also took the opportunity to thank the UK for their cooperation in various initiatives in Nigeria, including the rebuilding of the North East region following years of insurgency.
He described the UK as a second home for many Nigerians and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would remain strong in the years to come.
Laing, for her part, expressed sadness at leaving Nigeria, saying that she had enjoyed her time in the country and had been fascinated by its music, dance, and culture.
She congratulated Buhari on his successful eight-year tenure in office, noting that he had done an admirable job of holding the country together during challenging times.
The president’s statement about his retirement plans has generated a great deal of interest in Nigeria, with many people curious about what his post-presidential life will look like.
News About Nigeria understands that some have speculated that he may focus on his personal business interests, while others have suggested that he may play an active role in Nigerian politics as an elder statesman.
