Senator Ali Ndume’s appeal that the widow of Ifeanyi Ubah should replace him as the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District has been widely criticised by Nigerians.

News About Nigeria earlier reported that Ndume who represents Borno South on Tuesday appealed to the Senate to allow the widow of the late Senator to replace him.

According to him, allowing Ubah’s Widow to take over from him would help in ensuring that his legacy and aspirations are preserved through his family.

He further noted that replacing the late Senator with his wife will ensure the smooth continuity of his contributions to the Senate and his constituency while citing examples to prove that such a move is not strange in the country.

Reacting to this, netizens have vehemently kicked against the appeal, noting that the legacy of the late Senator can still be preserved without his widow taking over as Senator.

They are also questioning the modality on which such transfer of power is based, with some asking if the country is now practicing a hereditary monarchical system of government.

Also, many are querying the competence of Ubah’s wife, noting that the role goes beyond preserving her husband’s legacy to diligently serving the interest of the people of the constituent.

This group further noted that if the wherewithal to serve in the capacity is lacking, the widow would end up seeing the office as an inheritance to ‘enjoy,’ abandoning the people of the constituent.

They therefore called on the Senate to allow someone more competent to takeover from Ubah, adding that the appeal by the Borno Senator be dismissed as it is based on sentiments.
