A member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has made a U-turn and apologised for assaulting a Bolt driver who came to deliver a package to him, News About Nigeria reports.
In a public statement titled ‘A Statement of Regret and Commitment to Justice’, Ikwechegh apologised for his actions, stating that he regrets them.
Recall that he was seen in a recent video that went viral allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver who came to deliver an item at his residence.
He, however, acknowledged the behaviour as unacceptable for a public official and stated that he is committed to cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and addressing the situation through professional counselling.
Ikwechegh also announced his involvement in community service initiatives aimed at promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.
He said, “As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.” He acknowledged the embarrassment and harm caused to the driver, his constituents, and the nation.”
He further urged Nigerians to cultivate a culture of respect, tolerance, and dignity, emphasising that collective efforts can build a society where everyone is treated with fairness and compassion.
He thanked the public for their understanding and requested support in his journey towards accountability and growth.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has, however, stated that it will begin an investigation into the alleged assault of the driver in Abuja by Ikwechegh, who is representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
