Manchester United has parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a series of disappointing results, News About Nigeria reports.
The Dutchman, 54, was informed of the decision on Monday morning, marking the end of his two-and-a-half-year tenure.
The move comes after a 2-1 loss to West Ham over the weekend, a game that capped a challenging season start for the club.
In an official statement, the club said, “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
Despite winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City last May, ten Hag faced scrutiny after United finished eighth last season – their lowest-ever Premier League standing.
This season, the team has struggled further, currently sitting in 14th place with just nine matches played.
The decision to dismiss ten Hag was reportedly unanimous among the club’s board, following Sunday’s loss to West Ham.
Ten Hag initially joined United in 2022 on a three-year contract, stepping in after Ralf Rangnick’s interim role and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure.
During his time, he led United to victories in the 2023 Carabao Cup and the 2024 FA Cup, both key achievements that he often cited to defend his record.
Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who served as ten Hag’s assistant, will step in as interim head coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
Nistelrooy is considered a United legend, having scored 150 goals in 219 appearances and completed the clean sweep of domestic trophies.
Since retiring as a player in 2013, he has had some coaching experience and most notably won the KNVB Cup during a stint as PSV Eindhoven boss.
