Super Eagles Return To Nigeria After Libyan Airport Controversy

After enduring a difficult 14-hour delay at Al Abraq Airport, the Nigerian Super Eagles football team and their officials are finally set to depart Libya.

News About Nigeria reported that the delays stemmed from fuel and clearance issues, leaving the team stranded since Sunday afternoon.

Sports enthusiast Pooja Media shared on social media, “Super Eagles players and all officials are boarding to fly out of Libya to Nigeria.”

Super Eagles player Bruno Onyemaechi also confirmed their departure, expressing relief.

Team captain William Troost-Ekong pointed out the impact of social media in resolving the situation, stating that the fuel for their chartered flight, Value Jet, was finally being provided.

In earlier posts, Troost-Ekong voiced frustration, saying, “They could have released [the fuel] but haven’t given us permission since…How long are they planning to hold us here?”

The Libyan Football Federation, however, denied responsibility for the Super Eagles’ travel difficulties, stating that such situations are often due to routine air travel challenges and not intentional sabotage.

The statement reads, “We are deeply concerned about the recent reports surrounding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya. While we regret any inconvenience caused, it is essential to note that such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges that affect international air travel.

“These are standard procedures at airports worldwide, and delays or rerouting, though unfortunate, are not uncommon. We have the utmost respect for our Nigerian counterparts and want to reassure them that the diversion of their flight was not intentional.”

In a statement, the Federation noted that the Libyan team had faced similar issues upon arriving in Nigeria for an earlier qualifying match but did not make accusations.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) ultimately decided to withdraw from Tuesday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match, citing the stressful conditions endured by the players.
