Plateau Commences LG Polls

Plateau State has commenced election across the 17 local government areas of the state to elect new chairmen and councillors News About Nigeria reports.

Officials of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) are on ground to conduct the election in Jos, the capital city, and other LGs in the state.

It has also been gathered that heavy security has been enforced in the state to ensure a smooth running of the elections and violence-free elections.

According to election observers, armoured personnel carriers belonging to the police bomb squad, along with other security vehicles, have been stationed at strategic points in Jos and its environs.

Stern-looking security operatives have also been spotted guarding various locations, particularly around the PLSIEC headquarters on John Samci Road in the state capital, including heavily armed officers who have blocked adjoining streets leading to the commission’s office.

A security officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the heavy presence was based on instructions to maintain peace throughout the election process.

“We are here to enforce law and order. That is all I can say,” the officer stated.

The Chairman of PLSIEC, Plangji Cishak, speaking earlier, assured Plateau residents of the commission’s commitment to delivering a credible election.

“As we build up to the October 9 elections, I want to reaffirm our promise to the people of Plateau State: we are committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.

“This election is unique, as we have adhered to our timelines except for one postponement due to the nationwide protests. Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s support has been key to our success, and I must emphasise that the Governor has fully respected our operational independence,” he stated.
