16 Lives Lost In Ore-Ondo Highway Crash – FRSC Faults Reckless Driving

The Ondo command sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced a devastating crash on the Ore-Ondo highway, resulting in the loss of 16 lives.

News About Nigeria reports that in addition to the fatalities, three individuals were left with injuries following the Monday night incident, as disclosed by the agency.

On Wednesday, Samuel Ibitoye, the command’s spokesperson, issued a statement revealing that the collision involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck at the Ajue community along the Ore-Ondo highway.

Ibitoye identified reckless driving as the cause of the crash, specifically highlighting dangerous overtaking maneuvers and excessive speed, which led to a direct impact between the vehicles.

“The incident occurred at 8 pm on Monday, and rescue efforts concluded by 11 pm,” Ibitoye stated.

Ibitoye further noted that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace and a truck, with two passengers fortunate enough to escape the tragedy.

Preliminary investigations indicate that over speeding and wrongful overtaking led to a head-on collision, resulting in the tragic incident.

However, Ibitoye emphasized that the investigation into the accident’s cause is still ongoing.

Samuel Ibitoye stressed the importance of responsible driving practices, urging motorists to prioritize safety above all else.

He also pointed out that reckless speeding is a significant contributor to the high rate of road accidents in Nigeria.

In March, the Federal Road Safety Corps initiated a targeted campaign to combat unsafe driving habits, directing senior officials to increase enforcement against vehicle overloading and nighttime journeys.

This effort aims to enhance road safety measures and reduce the frequency of accidents.
