The Nasarawa police command has announced that 40 suspects arrested during the recent protests in the state have been taken to court.
News About Nigeria reports that the nationwide demonstrations, which began on August 1, aimed to bring attention to various issues, including economic struggles and security concerns, and sought action from the federal government.
However, in some areas, the protests escalated into widespread destruction and theft of both private and public property.
In a statement to NAN on Thursday, Ramhan Nansel, the police command’s representative, revealed that the suspects had been charged with allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers and engaging in looting.
According to reports, a total of 50 protesters were taken into custody on August 1, the first day of the demonstrations, across four local government areas.
The breakdown of arrests showed a significant number in Lafia, with additional arrests in Karu, Keffi, and Mararaba Udege.
The police spokesperson confirmed that 10 minors, who were among those arrested, have been released and reunited with their families.
Nansel urged citizens to go about their daily lives without fear of intimidation or threats, assuring them of their safety.
