The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has praised Nigerian youths for their peaceful protests across the country, while condemning the actions of rioters who infiltrated the demonstrations to cause chaos and destruction.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s national chairman, Falalu Bello, made available to News About Nigeria, the party called for a thorough investigation into the use of live ammunition by security agencies, resulting in the loss of lives and limbs.
In the statement, the PRP commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct, particularly in Ibadan, Oyo State, where they clearly made their demands for good governance known.
However, the party strongly condemned the actions of rioters who hijacked the protests in Kano and Kaduna States, causing destruction and stealing from ordinary Nigerians.
The PRP demanded legislation to define rules of engagement between protesters and security agencies, prohibiting the use of live ammunition in future protests.
Bello said that the party believed that the use of live ammunition to control protests must be stopped.
The PRP responded to President Bola Tinubu’s address on August 4, 2024, acknowledging his recognition of protesters’ demands and commitment to democratic principles.
However, the party criticised the president for not apologising for the economic hardship caused by his administration or addressing pressing issues like corruption, insecurity, and wasteful spending.
Bello asked that the government address the concerns of the protesters by reducing the cost of living, cutting the cost of governance, prosecuting corruption cases, addressing insecurity, and stopping wasteful expenditures.
The party stated its existence as an alternative to the ruling APC and PDP, which have failed Nigerians in the last 25 years.
The PRP added that it has solutions to the nation’s problems and will soon unveil its programmes and policies.
The statement urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to vote out the APC government in the next election and bring in a new administration that will prioritise good governance and empathy for citizens.
