The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an increase in new voter registrations ahead of the upcoming gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo States.
According to INEC, a total of 119,206 new voters have been added to the electoral roll in Edo State, while Ondo State has recorded 58,708 new registrations.
News About Nigeria reports that the Commission clarified that these figures do not include applications for voter transfer within the two states, as these individuals are already registered voters.
However, applications for transfer from other states have been received, with 8,847 applicants seeking to transfer to Edo State and 3,132 to Ondo State.
Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, announced that the comprehensive and final voter register for each state would be released shortly.
This register will include the new voters, as well as those who have applied for inter-state transfers.
Olumekun said that the Commission has uploaded a detailed analysis of the new voter registrations to its website and social media platforms.
This information includes demographic breakdowns by local government area, gender, age, occupation, and disability.
The release of the new voter figures and comprehensive register is a significant milestone in the lead-up to the 2024 governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
INEC’s efforts to enhance voter registration and participation are crucial in ensuring the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral process.
In the next few days, the Commission will release the comprehensive and final register of voters to be used for the 2024 governorship elections for each of the two states.
INEC said “the analysis of new voters for Edo and Ondo States, indicating their distribution by local government areas, gender, age, occupation and disability, has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms for public information.”
