President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday condemned the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, describing the attack as distasteful.

News About Nigeria reported that Trump, the Republican candidate for the upcoming November election, was rushed off stage when gunshots were fired at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

A day after the incident, President Tinubu joined world leaders in decrying the attack, stating that violence has no place in democracy.

“The attack on former President Donald Trump is distasteful and goes beyond the pale of democratic norms. Violence has no place in democracy,” he stated on X.

“I extend my sympathies to the former President and wish him relief. I also condole with the family of the deceased and those wounded and wish them a quick recovery.”

President Tinubu said Nigeria stands in solidarity with the United States during this tumultuous time.

According to a statement on the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) website, Trump is “doing well” and expressed gratitude to law enforcement officers.

The FBI is treating the incident as an assassination attempt.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social network, detailed the harrowing experience, stating that a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” Trump wrote.

Blood was visible on Trump’s ear and face as he was escorted away by protection officers.

The FBI confirmed that the investigation is “active and ongoing.”

Pennsylvania police assured the public that there were no further threats following the incident.

The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, armed with an AR-style rifle, fired from a building a few hundred metres away from the rally venue.

He was shot dead at the scene by a US Secret Service sniper.

A bystander was also killed, and two others were critically injured in the shooting, officials confirmed.
