Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has lauded President Bola Tinubu’s re-election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stating that it is a testament to his leadership qualities, News About Nigeria reports.
In a congratulatory message on Sunday, Abiodun said that Tinubu’s re-election reflects the unwavering trust and confidence the region places in his leadership.
Governor Abiodun noted that since Tinubu’s initial election two years ago, he has laid a solid foundation for the future integration of the sub-region and strengthened security among the people.
He commended Tinubu for his statesmanship in handling the violent changes of government in three member states, which helped avert potential crises in the region.
“Under President Tinubu’s guidance, ECOWAS has made remarkable strides in fostering economic integration, promoting regional peace and security, and enhancing cooperation among member states. His dedication to advancing the interests of the West African region has been evident throughout his first tenure, and we are confident that his reappointment will further accelerate the progress achieved thus far,” Abiodun said.
Abiodun praised Tinubu’s visionary leadership and strategic approach in addressing regional challenges, including the threats to democracy posed by coups in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, as well as issues of insecurity.
He said Tinubu’s commitment to dialogue helped avert potential conflicts that could have had severe consequences for the entire region.
He called on member states to collaborate with President Tinubu in advancing the objectives and values of ECOWAS, as unity is important in achieving regional goals.
Tinubu, whose first tenure is to elapse on July 9, 2024, was elected by a unanimous decision of fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday.
In his acceptance speech, the President said, “I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interests and build democratic values on the structure we inherited.”
