Finidi George has resigned from his position as the head coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles.

News About Nigeria gathered that the announcement came on Saturday following closely on the heels of the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) recent decision to recruit a foreign technical adviser.

Finidi George’s exit was confirmed by former Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, who shared the news on his social media account.

Ibitoye’s post read: “News just in: Finidi George @FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his @NGSuperEagles manager position.”

Appointed only on April 29, 2024, Finidi’s tenure as head coach was notably brief. He took over from Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired in February.

During his short stint, Finidi managed two games in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series, overseeing a 1-1 draw against South Africa and a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

The decision to step down comes amidst the NFF’s strategic moves to enhance the technical expertise of the national team by bringing in a foreign adviser.

This shift in direction appears to have influenced Finidi’s decision to resign, although detailed reasons for his departure remain undisclosed.

Finidi George, a former international player and erstwhile coach of Enyimba FC, was seen as a promising leader for the Super Eagles.

His appointment had been met with optimism from fans and football analysts alike, who believed his experience and understanding of Nigerian football would benefit the team.

The NFF’s move to appoint a foreign technical adviser is part of a broader strategy to elevate the Super Eagles’ performance on the global stage.

However, this decision has sparked debates within the football community, with opinions divided on the necessity and impact of foreign expertise on the national team.

As the NFF begins its search for a new head coach, the future of the Super Eagles hangs in balance.

Fans and stakeholders are eager to see how these changes will affect the team’s preparations and performance in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and other international fixtures.
