On Tuesday, the Delta State High Court in Asaba sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force to death for the murder of Onyeka Ibeh, a well-known phone dealer in Asaba, News About Nigeria reports.
Presiding over the case, Justice C. D. Diai found Ebri guilty of shooting and killing Ibeh on April 5, 2023.
The incident occurred when Ibeh, along with his wife, was driving from Ugbolu to Asaba. They were stopped by a police team for a search.
After waiting for a prolonged period without being attended to, the couple decided to drive on.
Angered by their action, Inspector Ebri opened fire, hitting Ibeh in the head. His wife, who was in the front seat, was unharmed.
The killing sparked protests by youths in Asaba, who took to the streets and the police headquarters demanding justice for Ibeh.
Following the verdict, Ifeanyi Ibeh, the older brother of the deceased, expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice.
E.H. Edema, a director in the Ministry of Justice who led the prosecution, hailed the judgement as a significant milestone.
“Today’s judgement is a landmark because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and the society at large,” Edema told journalists.
Meanwhile, News About Nigeria reported that an Oyo State Court has remanded 25 students, aged between 18 and 34, in prison until July 8, pending their trial for the alleged murder of Alex Timileyin, a student at Ajayi Crowther University.
Timileyin was reportedly beaten to death by his peers over accusations of mobile phone theft.
