Farmers and cattle herders have yet again locked heads in a clash in Hayin Kogi forest in Birninkudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State, News About Nigeria reports.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, on Monday.
He revealed that the clash has left about five farmers at the Hayin Kogi Forest injured after they were attacked by herders of the Waza Fulani settlements of the Birninkudu LGA.
Shiisu stated that the attack came as they were clearing bushes in preparation for wet-season farming.
He, however, noted that some of the farmers were able to escape while leaving behind their belongings, including tricycles, phones, and farm implements.
“Reports at the command’s disposal revealed that at 1700 HRS, farmers at the Hayin Kogi Forest were attacked by herders resident of the Waza Fulani settlements of Birninkudu LGA while clearing bushes in preparation for wet season farming.
“As a result, some of the farmers escaped and abandoned their tricycles, phones, and farm implements,” he stated.
He also disclosed that the police from the neighbouring Police Division surrounding the forest were immediately mobilised to the scene as soon as the report of the incident was received.
He noted that the injured farmers were taken to the Dutse General Hospital for treatment, and their belongings were recovered and returned to them.
He added that peace has been restored to the area, and efforts are being intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects while the case is being investigated.
“The CP has directed the Area Commander in charge of Birninku and Divisional Police Officers in charge of Birninkudu and Kiyawa to hold a stakeholders’ meeting with a view to dousing tension and averting a breach of peace in the area,” he added.
