Impeachment: DSS, Police Take Over Cross River Assembly Complex

Officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Dragon Squad, and personnel of the Nigerian Police Force have taken over the Cross River State Assembly complex, News About Nigeria have gathered.

The complex has been barricaded, with all access points blocked, as of the time of filing this report.

This development comes on the heels of the impeachment of the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elvert Anyambem, by members of the House. Anyambem was impeached over alleged gross misconduct and administrative high-handedness, according to sources.

This publication learnt that the plot to remove Anyambem had been in the works for months, with members expressing anger over his conduct and operation as speaker of the house.

Over 20 members had signed up for his impeachment, and the motion for his removal was moved on the floor of the House by Hon. Effiong Ekarika, representing Calabar South 1, and seconded by Charles Omang.

After his impeachment, the mace was taken away by members, and the lawmakers have since moved to Transcorp Hotel.

It is also understood that a new Speaker is expected to emerge at Transcorp Hotel.

It should be noted that in Cross River State House of Assembly, the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds the majority of the house haven won all 25 seats in the state legislative elections.

The APC won all nine seats in the Southern District, seven out of the available eight seats in Central District, and three in Cross River North. The party was victorious in various state constituencies, including Abi, Akamkpa I and II, Akpabuyo, Bakassi, Biase, Boki I and II, Calabar Municipality, and Calabar South I and II.

Other areas won by the APC were Etung, Ikom II, Obubra I and II, Obudu, Odukpani, and Yakurr I and II constituencies. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won seats in Ikom I, Ogoja, Yala II, Obanliku, and Bekwarra, while the Labour Party (LP) secured victory in Yala I State Constituency.
