The Kano State Government has confirmed the purchase of 41 exotic SUVs for members of the State House of Assembly.
News About Nigeria reports that each of the vehicles costs N68 million.
The total cost of the vehicles is approximately N2.6 billion.
According to the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Shehu Wada Sagagi, the lawmakers have a right to well-functioning vehicles, and the purchase is in line with the government’s obligations to the legislative arm.
Sagagi revealed that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was initially hesitant to approve the purchase but was persuaded by the principal officers of the Assembly, who argued that new cars were essential for their duties.
This publication learned that the SUVs have already been delivered to the lawmakers, and the government has instructed the contractor to spread the payment over time, considering the current economic situation.
Sagagi said the governor’s actions demonstrate respect for governmental rights and obligations, as well as a commitment to the well-being of all government branches and the people of the state.
A senior lawmaker, speaking anonymously, defended the purchase, stating that despite economic challenges, the vehicles are necessary for oversight functions and legislative duties.
When asked about the controversy surrounding the purchase, the lawmaker said, “Why are you making a mountain out of a molehill on the purchase of new vehicles for lawmakers? Previous administrations in the state did the same thing.”
Governor Abba Yusuf, who came into power in 2023, won the gubernatorial election under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platform, defeating Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Yusuf’s campaign focused on education, healthcare, and economic development.
