Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has been suspended for six months by the Board of Trustees of a faction of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for allegedly engaging in activities against the party’s interests.

The announcement was made by the National Secretary of the party, Comrade Oginni Olaposi Sunday, during a briefing at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, News About Nigeria reports.

Governor Yusuf’s suspension follows his failure to appear before a disciplinary committee to address allegations of violating the party’s constitution.

He was supposed to clarify his participation in an unauthorised national convention organised by the Kwankwasiya group in Abuja on April 6, 2024.

Speaking to the media, Oginni said it is important to uphold party rules and stated that Governor Yusuf’s absence from the disciplinary proceedings led to the decision to suspend him.

According to Oginni, Governor Yusuf had ample opportunity to address the allegations against him but failed to do so.

Consequently, the party’s leadership, in accordance with the NNPP constitution, decided to suspend him for six months.

The statement said, “His Excellency Gov. Abba Yusuf who was expected to appear and explain to the Committee the reason why Article 39.6 (e,f & g) shall not be invoked as sanctions against him as a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party, failed to make the Committee to submit its report including recommendations for the urgent consideration of the National Working Committee.

“The leadership of the NNPP, in order to strengthen our internal disciplinary and democratic measures, especially in the area of party supremacy without prejudice, is left with no other options than to decisively take necessary action, according to the letters of NNPP constitution 2022 as amended.”

The suspension, approved by the Board of Trustees and the National Working Committee, is effective immediately.
