Senator Simon Bako Lalong, who represents Plateau South Senatorial District, has pledged to propose a new bill on the role of traditional leaders in governing the country.
According to the politician, if passed into law, it will help tackle the issues of insecurity and bad behaviour in society, News About Nigeria reports.
He made this announcement during a special event to honour the late Long Kwo of Kwo Chiefdom, HRH Miskoom Fidelis Longtoe Atahiru, in Kwande, QuanPan Local Government Area of Plateau State.
In a statement signed by his media adviser, Dr. Makut Simon Machan, Senator Lalong said he will reintroduce this bill because it’s important for the country’s progress, even though it didn’t pass through the 9th National Assembly.
Senator Lalong praised the late Chief for being brave, honest, and peaceful in serving his people.
He said the Chief used his military experience and dedication to unite his people when he became Chief after many years of vacancy in the position.
Senator Lalong also recalled the time when he, as the governor, officially appointed the chief.
During the ceremony, the priest reminded everyone that life is short and that God expects people to be accountable and serve others well.
He encouraged everyone to live good lives and help others as much as possible.
When he visited the Chief’s family and the traditional council to offer his condolences, he encouraged them to honour the Chief’s memory by upholding tradition and by choosing his successor peacefully.
Recall that when he was governor of Plateau State, Lalong, in March 2023, signed the Plateau Traditional Rulers Remuneration Bill 2020 into law.
According to Lalong, the law would encourage traditional leaders in the discharge of their duties.
He had described the leaders as the custodians of culture, who are critical in maintaining peace and security in their various domains.
