NLC, TUC Suspend Nationwide Strike

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended the ongoing nationwide strike.

The strike, which began on Tuesday, was called off Wednesday night by the National Executive Council of the unions.

According to the unions, the strike was suspended due to the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The suspension follows a meeting between labour leaders with Ribadu and the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, at the Office of the NSA on Wednesday.

Speaking on the suspension of the strike, the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, explained that the unions suspended the strike because of the assurance given to them by Ribadu.

“The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust in the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his word,” he disclosed.

News About Nigeria reported that the NSA announced the arrest of the suspects responsible for the brutalization of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero.

The NLC President was brutalized in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on the 1st of November, 2023, when he and other labour members protested the non-payment of salaries for workers and pensioners.

Following Ajaero’s attack, organized labour embarked on a nationwide strike to protest against the brutalization of its president.

Organized labour said another reason for the strike was the failure of the federal government to implement most of the agreements they have reached with the workers and the FG’s ‘anti-poor people’s policies’ against Nigerian workers.
