Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has appointed a 38-year-old Engineer, Omobayo Godwin, as his new deputy.

News About Nigeria reports that Omobayo’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to happen today.

This announcement follows the removal of the former deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, by the state’s House of Assembly on Monday.

The decision came after a panel investigated Shaibu for allegedly revealing government secrets.

The Assembly deemed Shaibu’s alleged actions as grounds for impeachment.

The new deputy governor’s inauguration is slated to occur at the Edo State Government House in Benin City.

This publication learnt that friends and supporters have gathered at the venue to witness the event.

Omobayo, born on July 19, 1986, is from Akoko Edo Local Government Area of the state.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

He has a background in engineering and public administration.

He is a member of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Prior to his appointment, Omobayo worked as a Senior Maintenance Engineer at Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, gaining valuable experience in the South-South region.

Omobayo is also active in local politics.

His predecessor, Shaibu, had contested in the recent People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in Edo but was defeated by Dr. Asue Ighodalo.

Ighodalo emerged victorious in the party-endorsed primary, while Shaibu claimed victory in a separate one.

Shaibu had defeated nine other aspirants with over 301 votes while no fewer than 576 delegates decided the fate of Ighodalo.

In reaction, Shaibu, last month, filed a lawsuit against the party’s candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Federal High Court in Abuja regarding the PDP primary held on February 22, 2024.

Shaibu petitioned the court to invalidate the primary election which resulted in Ighodalo being selected as the party’s candidate for the September gubernatorial election.
