Five-Storey Building Collapses In Anambra

A five-storey building under construction collapsed on Basden Street, Fegge, in Onitsha, Anambra State, trapping an unknown number of people.

News About Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday while construction workers were reportedly on the top floor of the building.

The collapsed structure was intended for commercial purposes upon completion.

An excavator was deployed to the site to clear debris and also aid in rescue operations.

As of the latest report on Sunday, one person has been rescued from the wreckage, but the exact number of people trapped remains uncertain.

The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.

The state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for comment, and the Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Chinyere Nworah, has not responded to inquiries as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, News About Nigeria reported that the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the deaths of six people following a building that collapsed in the Onitsha area of the state in February.

The agency also revealed that about 20 other people were rescued from the collapsed building, most of whom sustained various levels of injuries and are currently in the hospital receiving treatment.

In the words of officials of SEMA, “About six bodies recovered from the rubbles have been deposited at the morgue, while those who sustained varying degrees of injuries were taken to the nearby hospital for medical attention, rescue efforts are still ongoing.”

News About Nigeria learned that the collapsed building was a three-storey building that was still under construction and was to serve as a market upon completion.
