Edo Assembly Moves To Impeach Shaibu, Serves Him Notice

The Edo State House of Assembly revealed on Wednesday that it has commenced impeachment proceedings against the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.

Speaking during plenary today, the majority leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghian, revealed that the impeachment notice has been officially given to the deputy governor.

According to Aiguobarueghian, the petition against the deputy governor was signed on March 5th (yesterday) by 21 out of the 24 members.

“The petition against the deputy governor came in on March 5 and was signed by 21 out of the 24 members. The number of members who signed the petition was more than the two-thirds requirement stipulated in the constitution,” Aiguobarueghian stated.

He further revealed that the petition against Shaibu is also based on two grounds: perjury and the revealing of government secrets.

Also, the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, while acknowledging receipt of the petition, revealed that she directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve Shaibu the impeachment notice to the deputy governor.

She also revealed that Shaibu has been given seven days to respond to the notice of impeachment.

News About Nigeria reports that the impeachment notice is coming following the rift between the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, who has been at war since last year when Shaibu announced his intention to run for the office of governor of the state.

Despite attacks from the leadership of the state, true to his word, Shaibu had organised a parallel primary election under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, where he was declared the winner and the candidate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
