June 12: Plateau Governor Frees 13 Inmates

Ahead of the Supreme Court’s hearing of the Plateau state governor’s appeal, Governor Caleb Mutfwang told the Supreme Court that the appeal was unfair to him in its judgement that nullified his election as governor.

The governor also lamented that he was not given a fair hearing by the Court of Appeal.

According to Governor Mutfwang, he presented eight points to the appellate court to prove the validity of his election, but only one was determined.

The Governor further explained to the apex court that the dismissal of the seven issues he raised by the Court of Appeal was against the directive of the Supreme Court that intermediate courts should pronounce on all issues placed before it.

This was contained in the Governor’s brief at the Supreme Court, which was submitted by an eight-man team of Senior Advocates of Nigeria led by Kanu Agabi and partly reads, “Eight issues were distilled and placed before the court below for determination. Unfortunately, only one issue (of jurisdiction) was determined by the court below leaving untouched seven issues.”

The governor therefore pleaded with the Supreme Court to nullify the judgement of the lower court and declare him the validly elected governor of the state.

News About Nigeria reported that the hearing of Governor Mutfwang’s brief by the Supreme Court is on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

Recall that the appellate court, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel on Sunday, November 19, 2023, nullified the election of Governor Mutfwang because he was not sponsored by his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
