INEC Releases Fresh Update On Bye-Election To Replace Gbajabiamila As Rep

The Lagos state chapter of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced on Friday that it has published the Surulere Federal Constituency I bye-election for the replacement of President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, as required by law.

The announcement was made by the INEC Public Affairs Officer in the state, Adenike Oriowo, on Friday.

According to her, the notice was pasted on Thursday at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo-Yaba for public viewing.

“The notice has also been posted at the commission’s Surulere Local Government Area Office. Section 28(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 provides that this should be done not later than 14 days before the election,” the INEC Public Affairs officer said.

Adenike also revealed that INEC has commenced the implementation of activities and a timetable for the forthcoming bye-elections, which are slated for February 2024.

She further noted that the commission is prepared for the election and would ensure that they adhere strictly to relevant laws and guidelines for the poll.

The INEC Public Affairs officer also assured the public that the commission would conduct a free, fair, and credible election in the constituency.

News About Nigeria reported that in the timetable for the bye-election, the INEC fixed January 5–9, 2024, for the conduct of the primary election and subsequent resolution of disputes that may arise from the primaries.

The public campaigns by political parties will commence on January 18 and end on February 1, 2024.

Recall that the Surulere seat became vacant following the resignation of Femi Gbajabiamila, who won the seat but was appointed Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu.
