Plateau Killings: Stop Preaching Hate, APC Chair Tells Religious Leaders

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Lagos State, Abayomi Mumuni, has cautioned religious leaders against preaching hate to their followers, following the killings in Plateau State, News About Nigeria reports.

He stated this in a statement issued by his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, describing the attack on the whole of Plateau as cruel and disheartening.

Mumuni, who is also a security expert, condemned the roles played by some religious leaders in the crisis ongoing in the state, stating that from his investigations into the crisis in the same way, he discovered that some religious scholars preach hate to their followers, maintaining that it is an ungodly act and not in tandem with the tenets of faith; therefore, it should be stopped.

The APC Chair maintained that hate sermons were the driving force behind the idea of reprisal attacks, which have been identified as a major highlight of the Plateau crisis.

He urged religious leaders in the state to preach tolerance and understanding at all times and also seek ways to help quell the fire rather than add fuel to it.

He urged the government to monitor and manage the kind of sermons pushed out by the religious leaders.

Mumuni further disclosed that the crisis in the state was a long, deep-seated ethnic and religious rivalry, noting that it is not new and has with it multiple dimensions.

He therefore advised that local intelligence be formed to tackle the crisis while bringing a lasting solution to the crisis in the state.
