Third Mainland Bridge Repairs: Iyana-Oworonsoki Section to Close In January

The Federal Ministry of Works has announced urgent repairs on the Iyana-Oworonsoki end of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, News About Nigeria reports.

The closure of this section is scheduled to commence on January 9, 2024, for the effective repairs of the entire segment of the bridge.

According to Olukorede Keisha, the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, emergency repairs are important for the maintenance and safety of the Third Mainland Bridge.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Keisha urged motorists to use alternative routes during the repair period.

Motorists are advised to consider alternative routes such as the Ojota – Ikorodu road – Funsho Williams Avenue – Eko Bridge – Apogbon – CMS – Ojota – Ikorodu Road – Jibowu – Yaba – Oyingbo – Iddo – Carter Bridge – CMS and the Gbagada – Anthony – Ikorodu Road – Funsho Williams – Eko bridge – Apogbon – CMS.

Traffic management officials will be deployed to manage traffic and ensure smooth movements, minimising discomfort during the repair period.

Keisha thanked the public for past cooperation and understanding and pointed out the need for continued cooperation during the forthcoming repairs.

The Federal Controller of Works had previously disclosed plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge’s asphalt layers, citing the need for a complete upgrade that had been overdue for the past 30 years.

The overhaul aims to replace the asphalt layer on both sides, ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge for the next decade.

Keisha stated, “So we were saying let us do a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay. Some of them have been long overdue because we haven’t done that in the last 30 years. It is just the failures that have shown up that we have been addressing.”

Preparatory works are pending, awaiting the contractor’s move to the site, and the Federal government has already awarded the contract for the comprehensive repair project.
