Election: Nasarawa Women Protest Again

Again, women in Nasarawa State took to the streets of Lafia, the state capital, on Tuesday, December 26, to protest the removal of David Ombugadu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate in the February governorship poll, News About Nigeria reports.

The leader of the protesting women groups, Hanatu John, who spoke with newsmen, stated that it was unsatisfying to celebrate Christmas and the holidays when they had been robbed of their mandate.

According to her, democracy was all about popular votes, therefore questioning why the person with the highest votes was not declared the winner of the election in the state.

She noted that the protests have been ongoing since March and that the women have been making a simple demand to the judiciary to right what, according to her, was an electoral injustice.

John maintained that they had given their votes for the candidate of the PDP, David Ombugadu, and not his APC counterpart, Abdullahi Sule, adding that the women of the state were hoping for the judiciary to do the right thing and declare the man with the highest votes governor, as that was a true democracy and also meant that the mandate of the people would be restored.

Recall that the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal had earlier on, on October 2, sacked Governor Abdullahi Sule of the All Progressives Congress and announced Ombugadu as the winner of the governorship election.

However, Sule, not satisfied by the judgement, approached the Court of Appeal, where he was declared the winner of the governorship election in the state.
